Global websites are neglecting the vulnerabilities that present them with managed security concerns, it has been revealed.

According to the latest WhiteHat Website Security Statistics Report, cross-site scripting remains the number one weakness, followed by business logic flaws, which enable hackers to take advantage of the functionality of a site.

The study revealed that 70 per cent of websites have at least one critical vulnerability.

Jeremiah Grossman, founder and chief technology officer at WhiteHat Security, commented: "One of the biggest takeaways from this report is that not all vulnerabilities are created equal, but many are very serious - leaving the door open to exploit sensitive information and cause some serious damage."

Earlier this week, studies by managed security provider AVG Technologies found that 99 per cent of malware threats originate online, underlining the need for comprehensive managed network security provision.

The group added that the aim of such malware is generally to steal identity, bank or credit card details.
