IT managers currently underestimate the seriousness of data loss and the importance of effective business continuity provision, it has been claimed.

According to research carried out by software provider Kroll Ontrack, just seven per cent of bosses believe data loss has a high impact on their business.

Adrian Briscoe, general manager at Ontrack Data Recovery APAC, a division of the group, commented that IT managers are not making the connection between data loss and lost revenue to a company.

He added: "IT managers who do not fully appreciate the impact of data loss could also be taking unnecessary risks, such as backing up data using USB external hard drives, which can be a single point of failure."

Mr Briscoe went on to say organisations must apply business continuity and data protection safeguarding measures before a loss occurs and maintain them throughout the entire data lifecycle.

Last month, disaster recovery specialist Imperva commented that the current economic environment is creating new threats to data centre security.
