Businesses face a unique range of security challenges when they implement a unified IP network, it has been claimed.

According to Sarah Carter, chief strategy officer and vice-president of marketing at FaceTime Communications, the technology - including unified communications (UC) solutions - differ somewhat from traditional communications technologies.

Speaking to TMCNet, she said: "UC implementations differ from traditional data from a security perspective.

"UC applications present privacy compliance issues and other unique security challenges that exceed the capabilities of traditional data security solutions, which cannot detect and protect against UC-specific attacks."

She claimed that as the adoption of web 2.0 technologies increases and suites of virtualized software become more integrated, the way businesses collaborate will be significantly altered. In turn, companies will have to deal with differing security threats.

A Frost & Sullivan analyst recently claimed that the adoption of managed security solutions can actually free up time for businesses and that the niche sector is expected to grow over the coming months.
